Concussion

If your child has sustained a concussion, our physiotherapists are here to help! A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. Following this impact, your child may experience symptoms including but not limited to loss of consciousness, headache, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, balance difficulties, sleep disturbances or cognitive impairments. These symptoms may occur immediately after impact, or could develop over the following few days.

Following a comprehensive assessment, your physiotherapist will focus on the physical portion of your child’s recovery, often including manual therapy techniques, balance and coordination exercises, vestibular training as well as endurance training. Should your child require further treatment, your physiotherapist will help you find an appropriate service provider in the area to address other areas of recovery such as vision, cognition and behaviour.

Every child’s recovery process is unique. Although the duration of concussion symptoms is variable, resolution of these symptoms often follows a sequential course. Most children with a concussion get better, but it is important to give your child’s brain time to heal and seek treatment as soon as possible.
